All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

Week ending 22 September 2009

Suzanne Collins Catching Fire rises significantly to rank 4th on San Francisco Chronicle's fiction hardcover list -- not the children's list, as at New York Times -- though it slips out of 1st place on the USA Today list, down to #12. With over a month until publication, Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson's The Gathering Storm (Tor) ranks solidly on all three Amazon lists today, around 50th place, with pre-publication sales. On print lists, John Twelve Hawks' The Golden City (Doubleday), ranks #16 on the New York Times fiction hardcover list this week.
