Locus Online, which went online in April 1997, is a semi-autonomous web version of Locus Magazine. Like the magazine, Locus Online focuses on news of the Science Fiction publishing field and coverage of new science fiction books and magazines.

The website is produced from southern California, independently from the editorial staff of the magazine. Locus Online's editor and webmaster is Mark R. Kelly.

The website is divided into the following sections:

  • News -- Awards nominations and results, death notices, and major publishing developments. January 2009 saw the launch of blog Locus SF&F News, including posts from the Locus Magazine offices in Oakland, CA.

  • Roundtable -- A new commentary blog, launched in February 2009, with posts from Locus reviewers and other invited guests.

  • Features -- Occasional reviews and essays, especially of current genre films by reviewers Gary Westfahl and the team of Howard Waldrop & Lawrence Person; and special items every April 1st.

  • Monitor -- Weekly to monthly listings of new books and magazines, with descriptions, cover images, links to relevant author and publisher websites, and quotes from reviews; and a weekly compilation of genre books that appear on general bestseller lists.

  • Directories -- Bibliographic listings by type of books published in each year, with links to descriptions in the Monitor pages, listings in the sample pages from Locus Magazine, appearances on bestsellers lists and awards ballots, and to online reviews.

  • Issues -- Samples of each issue of Locus Magazine, including the Table of Contents, excerpts from the interviews, and listings of Locus Bestsellers and of New & Notable Books.

  • Future History -- Listings of upcoming author signings and appearances (which are no longer printed in Locus Magazine), upcoming conventions (compiled by Locus Magazine), and selected forthcoming books (also compiled by Locus Magazine); plus announcements of forthcoming conferences and workshops.

  • Blinks -- Sidebar links to notable reviews, articles, and websites

  • Indexes -- To reviews and interviews that have appeared in Locus Magazine, and to reviews and other features that have appeared in Locus Online (cross-indexed by contributor, book or magazine title, and movie title). Also on the locusmag.com domain are the independently compiled Locus Index to Science Fiction, by William G. Contento, and the Locus Index to Science Fiction Awards, by Mark R. Kelly.

  • Links -- An extensive collection of links to other websites.
