From Locus Magazine's December 2012 issue

The puzzles just keep getting more puzzling — an excellent trait in a narrative driven by puzzles. It's clear early on that (despite initial uncertainty on the part of some characters) odd things really did happen on a couple of pre-Apollo-XI lunar missions and that all records of such events were thoroughly and deeply buried...

Sunday 23 December 2012  |  Reviews

From Locus Magazine's December 2012 issue

Learning how Le Guin views her own fiction suggests that the long and almost irresistible habit of deifying Le Guin in the realm of SF and fantasy just might, paradoxically, be another way of underestimating her achievement.

Special to Locus Online

It's a mess where the novel was a mess, and padded where it wasn't, and shares some of the flaws of modern special-effects-laden cinema. But with all those caveats, I can't help but thinking that we would be hailing it as masterpiece of filmmaking if only Jackson hadn't already set the bar so high.

Paul Di Filippo reviews Lois McMaster Bujold

Saturday 15 December 2012  |  Reviews

Special to Locus Online - Paul Di Filippo reads Lois McMaster Bujold, for the first time

I can now easily see why Bujold's books are so popular. They live at the still-beating eternal heart of science fiction, Campbellian space opera.

Elizabeth Bear: Earthly Convention

elizabeth bear
Excerpts from Locus Magazine's December Issue interview

I have heard from a number of friends, of Asian and African descent, about how frustrating it is to see how focused Western fantasy is on the history of medieval Europe. With Range of Ghosts, I wanted to write a book for them and their kids, that would in some way honor their heritage.

Paul Di Filippo reviews Allen Steele's Apollo's Outcasts

Wednesday 12 December 2012  |  Reviews

Special to Locus Online

Steele does everything right in this book, without a single false note. Moreover, he does it all with grace, the story unspooling in an accomplished manner that seems effortless, but which really hides immense work and skill.
