Karen Burnham and John Scalzi in Conversation: Redshirts, Touring, and More

I took advantage of John Scalzi’s swing through Houston on his book tour promoting the new novel Redshirts. We talk about touring, audiences, Ray Bradbury, the Golden Age, and how Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy killed sf humor for a generation. A short, fast conversation that I hope you’ll enjoy.

    The Audio seems bad.

It’s very odd–it sounds fine to me when I listen through my desktop speakers, but you’re right–there are some weird chirps and distortions when I listen through headphones. Charles Tan also noticed some problems the last time I recorded live through my laptop. I’ll try to get to the bottom of it. Thanks for pointing it out!

It appears that the audio is only in the left channel. The right channel has all the sound distortion.

Great interview. The audio is most definitely left channel only. I tried just my laptop, external speakers and headphones. All three are left channel only, nothing whatsoever from the right.

OK, I think I’ve identified the problem, having to do with selecting the channel settings when recording live from my laptop (the normal podcasts I record off Skype don’t have this problem). I can’t fix this one (at least not easily), but the ones I record at ReaderCon should be fixed. Thanks everyone!
