SFFH on General Lists
13 October 2002

Five genre hardcovers debut on US lists this week. The strongest is David Weber's War of Honor (Baen), appearing on five lists, with top ten rankings at New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Publishers Weekly. Walter Jon Williams's Star Wars novel, Destiny's Way (Del Rey), shows up on three lists, ranking higher than Weber on all three; but it didn't make two other lists that Weber did. And Mercedes Lackey's Exile's Honor (DAW) is on two lists.

Two other hardcover debuts are children's/YA novels: Brian Jacques's latest Redwall installment, Triss (Philomel), is #1 on the children's lists of NYT and PW, and #48 on the combined USA Today list. And Clive Barker's Abarat (HarperCollins/Joanna Cotler) debuts at #7 on NYT's children's list (though its UK edition has been on the Amazon list for a couple weeks already). Michael Chabon's Summerland, meanwhile, already selling on some lists, debuts at #1 on PW's October children's fiction list, and it cracks this week's general fiction list at Washington Post at #8.

And among paperbacks, a new edition of Dean Koontz's 1986 novel Strangers (Berkley) debuts on two lists.

Amazon UK's lists do not appear to have been updated this week; all rankings are the same as those posted last week.

This cell color indicates rankings on children's bestsellers lists [Italics and brackets indicate stale data -- rankings from one or more weeks before -- and do not contribute to the cumulative weeks on any list totals]

Key:
The table shows the current rank of each book and the change since last week, where:
   =    same as last week
   + or - with number:    difference since last week
   +    back on list
   ++    new on list
   x    no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The Bookseller, Publishers Weekly, BookSense, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
