SFFH on Bestseller Lists: 23 September 2001

As expected, Stephen King & Peter Straub's Black House (Random House; HarperCollins in the UK) debuted strongly in its first week, both in the US and UK on those lists which capture sales for the week since its 15 September on-sale date. (Expect the book to debut on other lists next week.) Coincidentally, as this book debuts, King's Dreamcatcher drops off the last hardcover list, NYT's, it ranked on until last week. In a weird numerological pattern, Black House debuted on three lists at #1 and three other lists at #4.

There are several other notable debuts this week. Just as Brian Jacques's Lord Brocktree dropped off the last paperback list, his new Taggerung (Philomel Books) debuts on 4 lists this week, as high as #4 on Wall Street Journal's fiction hardcover list.

In the UK, James Herbert's horror novel Once (Macmillan, 12 Sept) debuts at #6 on both UK lists in the table below.

Two genre books show up on Amazon's rankings this week: Robert Charles Wilson's The Chronoliths (Tor) at #23 on the hardcover list, and the trade paperback of Ken Grimwood's Replay is #12 on Amazon's paperback list.

Finally, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has finally come out in paperback in the US, ranking #1 on NYT's children's paperback list, and #1 overall on USA Today's (combined hardcover/paperback, fiction/nonfiction) list.

Terry Pratchett's Thief of Time has dropped off both UK lists.

The BookSense list has a current date on it, but rankings are the same as last week.

This cell color indicates rankings on children's bestsellers lists Italics indicates stale data -- rankings from one or more weeks before

The table compiles SFFH books placing on general bestseller lists. The table shows the current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, BookSense, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
