SFFH on Bestseller Lists: 1 April 2001

No surprise, Stephen King's Dreamcatcher debuts strongly on many lists at #1 or #2; it's an indication of how timely the various lists are (regardless of their nominal dates) to see which ones do or do not rank King this week. Amazon in particular seems to be lagging; it debuted new books by Feist and Weber this week, two or three weeks after those books appeared on other lists. In contrast, King's novel managed to appear two weeks ago on the UK lists, despite the later official publication date in the UK. (And it appeared for sale in Australia even earlier in March, according to Locus's Oz contingent.) Sales totals for King from the Times of London: 9,797 this week; 18,410 total so far.

The Wall Street Journal list expresses relative sales in a unique way, by indicating a "sales index" for each book relative to 100, which indicates the median number of copies sold of the No. 1 fiction bestselling titles each week during 2000. Dreamcatcher's sales index this week: 205.

This cell color indicates ineligible titles, e.g. YA titles excluded from fiction lists, or no paperback lists This cell color indicates stale data; e.g., children's bestseller lists updated only monthly

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list). The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, BookSense, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate general [nonfiction] lists (gen), children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.
