SFFH in Film and TV
The Sixth Sense and The Green Mile are among the five best picture nominees for this year's Oscar awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced this morning. They're competing against American Beauty, The Cider House Rules, and The Insider.
The Sixth Sense has six nominations, including Haley Joel Osment for supporting actor, Toni Collette for supporting actress, M. Night Shyamalan both for directing and original screenplay, and Andrew Mondshein for film editing.
The Green Mile also has nominations for supporting actor Michael Clarke Duncan, the adapted screenplay by Frank Darabont, and for sound.
Several other SFFH films received multiple nominations, most prominently Being John Malkovich, which though not included among the best picture nominees, received a best director nod for Spike Jonze. The film also has nominations for supporting actress Catherine Keener, and Charlie Kaufman's original screenplay.
It's not uncommon for the best picture and best director categories to disagree in at least one spot. This year, while four of the five nominees in both categories overlap, The Green Mile is nominated for best picture but not best director, while Being John Malkovich is nominated for best director but not best picture. Both films received screenplay and acting nominations.
Typically, SFFH films fared well in the technical categories. The Matrix has a total of four nominations, for film editing, sound, sound effects editing, and visual effects. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace has three, for sound, sound effects editing, and visual effects, while Sleepy Hollow is nominated for best art direction, cinematography, and costume design.
Films with one nomination each include Bicentennial Man, makeup; The Mummy, sound; Stuart Little, visual effects; Fight Club, sound effects editing; Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, makeup; and three films in the original song category: South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, (''Blame Canada''), Tarzan (''You'll Be In My Heart''), and Toy Story 2 (''When She Loved Me'').
The awards will be announced March 26.
