SFFH on Bestseller Lists
6 March 2000

David Weber's latest Honor Harrington novel enters three general fiction hardcover lists this week, and leads the SF-genre bestsellers lists (which are not compiled in the table below) at Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

Now that we've stopped compiling those SF-genre lists in this weekly table, Amazon.com did update its list this week (under a header that states the list is updated weekly on Wednesdays). Second place on both the Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com SF lists this week is Michael Stackpole's Star Wars paperback; after that, both lists mix backlist titles (Tolkien; Robert Jordan) with current releases. Both online booksellers also have separate horror bestseller lists. Amazon's is led this week by King's Green Mile paperback and Dean Koontz's False Memory hardcover; Barnesandnoble's list has Koontz first, then King. We'll keep monitoring the genre lists, and if they get back to reliable weekly updates, perhaps we'll add them back into this chart.

BookSense has gone back this week to lumping the Harry Potter series into one entry, at first place, on its children's bestseller list. Brian Jacques's Redwall series is listed in third place.

The nonfiction list at San Francisco Chronicle is interesting because it includes a higher percentage of science-themed books than any other list. This week Matt Ridley's Genome debuts in 4th place; it's not on any other list. Still prominent on several lists is Dava Sobel's Galileo's Daughter, a strong seller since its publication last October.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list). The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and BookSense. All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.
