Katherine Kurtz leads the hardcovers, and the de Lint book also did well in its second month. There was no new runner-up. We had 93 nominees, up from last month's 83.

In paperbacks, Brin had a strong showing. The Hobbit made it back on the list – in the top five! – thanks to the movie hype. New runner-up: Year's Best SF 5, edited by David G. Hartwell (Eos). Nominees:119, up from 113.

Stephenson's Cryptonomicon continued to dominate trade paperbacks, with nearly three times the votes of the next book. The Lord of the Rings also made the list again. New runner-up: Lilith's Brood by Octavia E. Butler (Warner Aspect). We had just 53 nominees, to 62 last month.

For media, the new Star Wars book had a tremendous lead. The new runner-up is Star Trek: New Earth, Book 2: Belle Terre by Smith & Carey. Nominees: 31, just down from 32.

In gaming-related, ''Forgotten Realms'' has two entries, and early ''DragonLance'' Dragons of Autumn Twilight returned yet again. Only four titles made the cut. Nominees: 21, to last month's 34.
