    Turner Prize

The 1998 George Turner Prize for Science Fiction and Fantasy has been won by 19-year-old Tasmanian writer Tansy Rayner Roberts for her comic fantasy novel Splashdance Silver. The prize includes publication by Transworld Publishers with a $10,000 advance. The winner was announced at PhanCon, a fantasy convention in Paramatta (a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia), on July 11th, by Shona Martin of Transworld Publishers. The prize was judged by Peter Nicholls, Karen Miller, and Louise Thurtell. Transworld will publish the book this September and has signed Roberts for two more novels set in the same universe.

This is the first annual Turner Prize, named in honor of George Turner, the prominent Australian novelist (Beloved Son, Drowning Towers, etc.) and critic who died in 1997. Organizers hope to present next year's prize at the 1999 World Science Fiction Convention in Melbourne, Aussiecon Three, which had scheduled Turner as Guest of Honor.
